EMRI's emergency ambulance service launched in Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi launched the Emergency Management and Research Institute's (EMRI) 108 emergency ambulance service in the state here on Monday.

According to the MoU signed between Tamil Nadu Government and EMRI, initially 198 ambulances would be provided by the state government at the cost of Rs 17.82 crore to EMRI.

EMRI in turn would provide required personnel for manning the emergency response centre and the ambulances.

The ambulances would be equipped with emergency equipment ranging from defibrillators to ventilators, to handle almost any emergency situation.

Apart from this, the ambulances would also be equipped with GIS and GPS systems, which would help locate the geographical position of emergency scene and help the nearest ambulance reach the site in the shortest possible time.

The 108 emergency service is free of cost and the 108 was a toll free number, which can be accessed from any landline or mobile phone without any prefix or suffix.

The emergency response centre physicians and the emergency medical technicians in the ambulance would provide free pre-hospital care while transporting the victim in the ambulance to the nearest hospital of his choice.

At present, EMRI would operate from the Kasturba Gandhi Hospital for women and children in the city.

Karunanidhi turns 85 today

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Dr. M. Karunanidhi today turned 85. Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi were among those who greeted the senior leader over telephone. Dr. Karunanidhi during his conversation with the Prime Minister requested him to rechristen the Sethu Samudram project as Sethu Ram project.
Earlier in the morning, the Chief Minister told newsmen in Chennai that the speedy implementation of the canal project is the only message he has to say on this day. Central and state Ministers joined hundreds of party workers to greet the elder statesman. Several welfare programmes including screening of school children through the state for heart ailments are being launched today.
A massive public meeting will be held in Chennai this evening to mark the occasion. The meeting will be attended by External Affairs Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, leader of the Left Parties and Union Ministers.

Chennai (Tamil: சென்னை), formerly known as Madras (help·info), is the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Chennai is known for its sport venues and hosts an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) event, the Chennai Open. The city faces problems of water shortages, traffic congestion and air pollution. The state and local governments have undertaken initiatives such as the Veeranam project, Rainwater harvesting and the construction of mini-flyovers to address some of these problems.
